Scaling and Root Planning Treatment
A scaling and root planing treatment is performed by a dentist or a dental hygienist. An ultrasonic device is utilized to remove heavy deposits, plaque and tartar from the teeth, and deliver an antimicrobial flush to the periodontal pockets. The root surfaces of the teeth are then planed smooth, which removes residual toxins and helps keep the area free of bacteria, as well as helping the connective tissue to reattach. An oral antibiotic will help eliminate residual bacteria.
Periodontal pocket reduction surgery may be necessary to reach tartar that can't be removed with scaling and root planing and to reduce pocket depths to prevent disease recurrence and facilitate brushing and flossing.
Surgery may also be used to regenerate bone and other soft tissues, or adjust the level of the gumline. Treatment takes place in the dental office, utilizing a local anesthetic. Oral sedation, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), or IV conscious sedation is also available for your comfort.
